The JUTC bus didn't just catch fire. Something failed first. Here's what we think it was.

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, a JUTC CNG bus caught fire at the Spanish Town bus terminal. Eyewitnesses reported flames coming from the rear of the vehicle. We weren't called to the scene — but as forensic fire safety specialists, we couldn't stay silent either.


Fires are caused by defects, acts, or omissions. Before we name a probable cause, understand this: forensic fire investigation is not guesswork. It is observation, scene recreation, controlled testing, and systematic elimination. We cannot conclude without examining the scene. What we can do is give you the knowledge to understand what likely went wrong — and why it matters for every CNG vehicle on Jamaican roads. 


Our most probable cause

Leaking valve or seal — CNG rear-engine configuration


The Golden Dragon Splendor model carries its engine at the rear — the exact location where flames were observed. A damaged, broken, or improperly sealed cylinder valve or regulator allows high-pressure gas to leak. Trapped in that confined, poorly ventilated rear compartment, one electrical spark or hot engine component is all it takes.


The full picture — 6 ways a CNG system can fail


  1. Corrosion & rust: Moisture and inadequate maintenance corrode cylinder walls, weakening them against the 200–250 bar pressure they carry.

  2. Physical damage: Dents, gouges, and scratches from road debris or collisions create micro-cracks that grow under repeated high-pressure cycling.

  3. Liner degradation: Composite cylinders (Type III & IV) develop creases and delamination from the constant expansion and contraction of pressure cycles.

  4. Leaking valves & seals — most probable: Gas escapes into a confined, unventilated space and meets an ignition source. In a rear-engine bus, the consequences are catastrophic.

  5. Extreme heat & overfilling: Heat causes CNG to expand. A vehicle parked in direct sunlight post-fill, or filled beyond rated capacity, builds dangerous internal pressure — especially if the PRD (Pressure Releasing Device) fails to vent.

  6. Substandard or improperly mounted kits: Uncertified aftermarket CNG kits lack essential safety features. Poor mounting allows vibration to fracture brackets, gas lines, and tank walls over time.


What every CNG vehicle operator must do now


  1. Regular inspection: Check for rust, dents, and visible wear on every cylinder.

  2. Hydrostatic testing: Mandatory periodic pressure testing as required by regional safety standards.

  3. OEM systems only: Original or certified factory-fitted CNG systems — never unauthorized aftermarket conversions.
